MOLSYS TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM – MASS SPECTROMETRY LAB
The mass spectrometry laboratory of the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy (DBCP) of the University of Siena, located in the spaces of the Medicine Research Center of Toscana Life Sciences Foundation, was born thanks to the convergence of the competencies of the researchers in chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutics of the DBCF and the state-of-the-art technological platforms acquired thanks to the Department of Excellence 2018-2022 grant.
The laboratory is part of the MolSys technology platform, a technology hub for the characterization of molecular systems at many levels: structural determination with the Spectrometry Center; biological activity with the High Throughput Cellular and Biochemical Screening Lab; computational biology with the High Performance Computing Lab. The hub provides research and services to the fields of proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics, both academic and corporate.
The mass spectrometry lab includes two complementary platforms combined in a single facility at TLS:
- MALDI mass spectrometer: the Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization technology allows the study of high molecular weight molecules such as proteins, glycoproteins, polymers and also for tissue imaging. It finds application in proteomic research, biological drugs and clinical diagnostics.
- TimsTOF mass spectrometer: the innovative Trapped Ion Mobility technology contributes to the very high resolution needed to identify hundreds of small molecules (sugars, amino acids, hormones, etc..) present in complex mixtures such as biofluids (blood, urine), cell extracts, botanicals. It finds application in metabolomics of rare and complex pathologies, in the research of new bioactive molecules from natural compounds and the structural study of drugs.
